Guide

Product-led growth (PLG) means the product itself is the main engine for acquiring users, converting them to paid, and expanding accounts. OpenView popularized the term. Slack, Figma, Notion, Calendly, and many modern dev tools grew this way: someone tries the product, feels the job get done, invites others, and only later does money or IT appear.

PLG is not "no salespeople." It is "sales does not create demand from zero for every deal." Humans enter when the product has already created pull.

Concept

Go-to-market (GTM) is how you take a product to customers: who finds it, who buys it, and whose labor sits between interest and revenue. PLG is one pole. Sales-led is the other. Most companies end up in between.

Traits of strong PLG

  • Low-friction signup (often no credit card for free tiers or trials).
  • Fast time-to-value so users activate without a human.
  • In-product upgrade and expansion paths.
  • Virality or collaboration that creates distribution as a side effect of usage.
  • Usage data that tells you who is getting value (for monetization and later sales assist).

If you are PLG-first, the roadmap should prioritize:

  • Signup and activation friction removal.
  • Empty states, templates, docs, and in-product education.
  • Team invite and sharing (distribution).
  • Self-serve billing, plan changes, and usage dashboards.
  • Instrumentation for funnels and product-qualified leads.

Gating the core canvas behind a demo call is usually a GTM smell for a PLG product. Gating SSO behind enterprise is normal.

Walking through a designer signup

A designer signs up free, invites two teammates (viral activation), the team hits editor limits, and an in-product paywall converts many teams self-serve. Sales never cold-called the first designer. That is PLG doing the acquisition and conversion jobs.

Common mistakes

  • Copying Slack's motion onto a $200k/year workflow that needs security review.
  • Requiring a demo before trial. You reintroduced the friction the product was designed to remove.
  • Hiding pricing or forcing "talk to sales" for every upgrade.

Check yourself

Your ACV is $12/month. Hire a field sales team? No. Low ACV cannot fund humans. Product, growth and docs have to do the work.

Is PLG "no salespeople"? No. Sales does not create demand from zero for every deal. Humans arrive after pull exists.

Key takeaways

  • PLG uses the product to acquire, convert and expand. Sales amplifies pull; it does not invent it.
  • Fast time-to-value, invites, self-serve billing and usage instrumentation are the roadmap.
  • Do not gate the aha behind a demo call.
