Schlep blindness
Founders skip thankless, messy work. Markets often underprice exactly those problems.
Schlep is thankless, boring, multi-step work. Schlep blindness is the tendency to ignore ideas that require it. Founders chase elegant algorithms and avoid regulatory filings, payments edge cases, messy onboarding, or sales calls.
Markets often underprice exactly those problems. Stripe's early advantage was obsessing over the schlep of payments so developers did not have to.
The big idea
Imagine two chores. One is inventing a prettier calendar. One is reconciling a clinic's billing system with its electronic health records. The first photographs well. The second is a pile of HIPAA, legacy APIs, and office-manager politics.
Schlep blindness is walking past the second pile because it looks unglamorous. The analogy breaks when the schlep is structurally impossible — a regulated market you cannot enter, or a two-sided marketplace with no wedge. Unsexy is not automatically a good business. It is a hint that competition may be thinner.
Walking through it
Unsexy B2B workflows — invoicing exceptions, compliance checklists, inventory sync between two ugly systems — can be better businesses than glamorous consumer apps. Competition is thinner. Willingness to pay can be higher. "Boring" often means a budget already exists.
Two ideas:
- (A) A beautiful AI journaling app for Gen Z.
- (B) Automated reconciliation between a clinic's EHR and its billing system.
A sounds fundable in a tweet. B requires schlep: HIPAA, legacy APIs, sales to office managers. B may have clearer willingness to pay and a narrower customer you can actually reach.
The test is not "is this annoying to build?" The test is: does someone already spend money to paper over this mess, and can you reach them this month?
Common mistakes
- Equating unsexy with good. A painful workflow with no budget and no buyer is still a bad idea.
- Avoiding sales calls as if they were optional schlep. For most B2B, talking to buyers is the work.
- Building the elegant core and postponing the messy integration. The integration is often the product.
- Picking consumer glamour because B2B "feels corporate." Feeling is not a market.

Why might clinic billing reconciliation beat an AI journal as a first company?
A budget already exists, the buyer is findable, and fewer founders want the HIPAA schlep.
What is schlep blindness, in one sentence?
Ignoring a good idea because the work looks thankless or boring.
Key takeaways
- Schlep is thankless multi-step work. Blindness is skipping it because it is ugly.
- Unsexy B2B often has budget, a narrow buyer, and thinner competition.
- Stripe-style advantages come from absorbing schlep so the customer does not have to.
- Unsexy is a hint, not a proof. You still need willingness to pay and a way to reach the buyer.
